Brain Injury Services of SWVA Awarded Three-Year CARF Accreditation

Aug 26, 2008

The Commission on Accreditation Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) announced that Brain Injury Services of SWVA has been accredited for a period of three years for its Case Management programs serving adult, children and adolescents. This is the first accreditation sought and attained by Brain Injury Services of SWVA from an international accrediting body.

This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable and accountable.

Founded in 2000 by Fran and Greg Rooker after the loss of their 11-year-old son to brain injury, BISSWVA has provided case management services, free of charge, to over 570 persons with brain injury and their families throughout Southwest Virginia. Five offices are located throughout 11,000 square miles of Southwest Virginia to serve the region’s needs: Roanoke, Blacksburg, Wytheville, Abingdon and Norton.

CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served. Founded in 1966 CARF establishes consumer-focused standards to help organizations measure and improve the quality of their programs and services. Herb Start, CARF Surveyor, stated that BISSWVA has “a unique, positive brand of case management which is practical focuses on problem solving and establishes a high degree of positive relationships with clients and families. Person centered philosophy is evident in the case notes and there is a clear interest in helping client progress toward goals.”
